Black Friday holiday decor: what's worth buying

Black Friday lands at a handy moment for decorators. It's late enough that you know what you need for this year and early enough that there's still time to put it all up. The smartest buys are the big, durable pieces you'll use for many seasons: trees, lights, yard displays, and the storage that keeps them in good shape.
Below is how we'd think about each category, what to check before you add something to a cart, and a dated list of specific products we're watching. We don't list discount amounts we can't confirm. Prices move fast this week, so always check the current price on the retailer's page.
Make a list before the sales start
The best Black Friday shopping happens the week before. A short list keeps you focused on what you actually need instead of what happens to be on the homepage.
- Measure first. Ceiling height and floor width for a tree, roofline length for lights. Our lights calculator handles the math.
- Check what you have. Plug in last year's strands and pull out the tree. Knowing what still works keeps the list short.
- Set a price you're happy with. Look up current prices on a few items now, write them down, and you'll know a good price when you see one.
- Read return policies. Holiday return windows vary by retailer. It's worth knowing before you buy something large.
Artificial trees
Trees are often the biggest single decor purchase of the year, so they're one of the most worthwhile things to shop for on sale. They also tend to sell through in popular sizes as December gets closer.
What to check
- Height and width against your measurements.
- Pre-lit or unlit. Pre-lit saves setup time every year; unlit gives you control over the lights. Our artificial tree guide walks through it.
- Light count and tip count when comparing trees of the same height.
- Hinged branches for faster setup.
If one tree is clearly the right fit, a fair price on it is a good buy. The right size at a fair price is the win here.
Outdoor and tree lights
Lights are a great Black Friday category because you can buy in quantity. If you're switching to LED, upgrading to commercial-style strands, or trying smart lights for the first time, this is a sensible week to do it.
What to check
- Outdoor rating for anything going outside.
- Color temperature. Match warm white to warm white. A consistent white is what makes a house look polished.
- Bulb size: minis for trees and shrubs, C7 or C9 for rooflines.
- Connect limits on the package, so your runs work on the outlets you have.
- Buy one extra strand of the same product. Matching lights later in the season can be tricky.
Not sure which type to choose? See our outdoor lights comparison.
Inflatables and yard decor
Inflatables are pure fun, and kids tend to love them. They're also a category where the variety is huge, so it helps to know what you're after.
- Size for your yard. A 6 ft figure suits most front lawns; very large ones need open space and extra staking.
- Built-in lights make them work at night, which is when most people see them.
- Stakes and tethers should be included. Wind is the main thing that knocks inflatables around.
- Outdoor power: plan on an outdoor-rated cord and a timer.
Storage
Storage is the least exciting thing on this list and one of the most useful. A good tree bag and ornament boxes protect everything else you buy, and they make January takedown much quicker.
- Tree bags with wheels are a big help for full-size trees, which can be heavy and awkward.
- Match the bag to the tree. Check the bag's listed tree height and dimensions.
- Divided ornament boxes keep glass ornaments safe and easy to find next year.
- Wreath boxes or bags keep wreaths round instead of flattened.
What can wait until after Christmas
Some things are just as easy to buy after the holiday, often during post-season clearance. If your list is long, these can usually wait:
- Extra ornaments and filler decor for next year.
- Wrapping paper, ribbon, and gift boxes.
- Replacement strands for a set you already know you love.
- Additional storage bins, once you see how much you need.
We'll cover after-Christmas clearance in a separate guide closer to the date.
A simple Black Friday week plan
- The week before: measure, check what you have, write your list, and note current prices on a few items.
- Thanksgiving week: many retailers start sales early, so check your list items as they appear.
- Black Friday weekend: buy the big pieces first: tree, lights, any yard display.
- Cyber Monday: a good time to fill in smaller items like storage, extra strands, and gifts.
- When it arrives: open, assemble, and test everything right away, while return windows are open.
